English in a Multilingual and Multicultural World Research and Community Service Group
The research group focuses on examining linguistic and cultural phenomena, particularly the use of English as a Lingua Franca in Indonesia. This group addresses language and cultural issues faced by Indonesians as non-native English speakers interacting with native or other non-native English speakers. The research themes include language contact, variation and change, linguistic norms and their acceptance, ownership of English, expression of social identities in various text modes, as well as critical perspectives on language use, language users, media, language policy, and multimodality. The findings of this research group are both theoretical and practical, providing a foundation for English language policy-making within the Indonesian context—specifically in Jember, East Java, and more broadly across Indonesia. This work is also relevant for English use in business, tourism, and education, serving as a medium for discussion in global forums.
